Fascination in light
A small excursion into a multifaceted phenomenon
Light means life. Without sunshine, flora and fauna as well as our human existence would be gloomy in the truest sense of the word. Light helps plants to grow and the metabolism of all living beings on this world to function. No wonder that the phenomenon of light captures and fascinates mankind. This is one of the most basic aspects of our existence.
What is light?
Purely physically, light is a high-frequency electromagnetic wave. Light is unbelievably fast. The often-cited speed of light is about 299,000 kilometres per second, an incredible speed! Light is also enormously flexible. It can bend, flex, break. If one splits white light into its wavelengths, it shines in almost all the colours of the rainbow. The human eye can only perceive a fraction of this entire spectrum of electromagnetic radiation. We can only see wavelengths between 380 and 780 nanometres.
From prehistory to the digital age and Industry 4.0
Our ancestors about 1.7 million years ago did not understand how to question or even explore this topic in depth. Already in prehistory, the discovery of fire, and thus light, was an enormous quantum leap, if only primarily to use as a source of light which was essential to life.
We’ve learned through human history to technically benefit from light. Scientific disciplines such as optics and photonics, as well as technical applications, such as laser welding, developed over time. Modern laser technology works in invisible nano ranges. Light has become indispensable for processing materials for various applications with the highest precision. Without current laser technology, our current life could not be imagined – in medical devices, shipbuilding, electrical engineering, machine tools and aerospace.
The light phenomenon – both innovative and a matter of course
Agreed – nearly no one thinks about the source of light. Switching on the light, and the thus-triggered activation of a light source or a device are naturally part of our everyday lives. But you notice light’s essential meaning to our lives, for example, in our language. There are countless linguistic images in which light plays a role. Some people, for example, “light up” with a relevant insight. And others bring a “light into the dark” thanks to profitable insights.
But on closer inspection, light is and remains a phenomenon that is still full of exciting secrets. They are just waiting to be discovered. In this sense, innovative laser welding technology is programmed for the future, and will continue to offer a wide range of technological opportunities. This includes things that we may not be able to imagine today.
Light – a part of Sigma Laser’s DNA
This knowledge drives us. The people at Sigma Laser perceive of the phenomenon of light as a necessary part of their work.
